A military separation headshot is easiest to get while you still have base access and a predictable schedule. Wait until terminal leave and you're off post, in the middle of a job search, and paying a studio for something you might have gotten free a few months earlier. This guide puts the photo on the same clock as your Transition Assistance Program (TAP) dates, so it's done before SkillBridge or terminal leave takes you away.
Why the Headshot Belongs on Your TAP Timeline
The photo isn't a TAP requirement. We found no headshot requirement in 10 U.S.C. 1142 or the Military OneSource TAP curriculum. It belongs on the timeline because your job search starts there, and the people reading your LinkedIn profile from that point on are civilians.
One hiring manager on r/army put it this way: start engaging with recruiters "before you are holding your DD214." A profile with a board photo or no photo makes that harder. LinkedIn's own help center says members with a profile photo get up to 2X more profile views.
While you're on active duty you're near a base photo office and your schedule is predictable. SkillBridge or terminal leave takes you away from both.
The Military Separation Headshot Checklist, Keyed to Your Dates
Count back from your separation or retirement date. Each row is the latest sensible point for the step.
| When | What the law or program says | What to do about your photo |
|---|---|---|
| 24 months out (retiring) | Pre-separation counseling should start "as soon as possible" within the 24 months before an anticipated retirement (10 U.S.C. 1142(a)(3)(A)) | Book the headshot early. You have the most base access and the most time. |
| 12 months out (everyone) | Counseling can start no later than 365 days before separation (same section). Unanticipated separations start as soon as possible instead. | Get the headshot done now if you haven't. Update your LinkedIn profile around it. |
| 180 days out | SkillBridge can start up to 180 days before separation, with chain-of-command approval (GAO-24-107352). Your service may cap it shorter. | Have the photo on your profile before you report. Your new colleagues will look you up. |
| 90 days out | TAP Capstone must happen no later than 90 days before separation (Military OneSource) | Use Capstone to check your profile is finished: photo, headline, experience in civilian terms. |
| Terminal leave | You're off base and job hunting full time | If you still don't have a headshot, this is the expensive and rushed version. |
The 365-day rule is a deadline for starting counseling, not finishing it. And TAP applies once you've served 180 continuous days on active duty. Disability separations are covered regardless.
SkillBridge is common enough to plan around. GAO counted almost 12,000 participants in its 2024 review, and about 83% were enlisted. If you're one of them, the employer's staff will probably look at your profile before your first day.
Where to Use the Headshot (and Where Not To)
Use it on:
- Your LinkedIn profile
- Applications and profiles with private-sector employers and contractors that ask for one
- Networking platforms, conference badges and company bios once you're hired
Don't put it on a federal resume. Federal agencies tell applicants to leave photos off. NIST's applicant guidance lists "Photos" among the things a resume should not include, next to personal details like your Social Security number. Our federal hiring headshot guide covers where photos do come up in federal jobs, such as badge photos and agency bios.
Uniform Photo or Civilian Photo? Retirees and Separatees Differ
This question comes up again and again on the military subreddits. Plan for a civilian photo whether you retire or separate.
- Everyone, retirees included: DoD's uniform rule (32 C.F.R. 53.2) bars wearing the uniform in connection with private employment when it could suggest official sponsorship.
- Retired officers: 10 U.S.C. 772(c) gives them a legal right to wear the uniform of their retired grade. The private-employment limit above still applies.
- Former members who aren't retirees and served in wartime: they may wear the uniform only at funerals, memorial services, weddings, inaugurals and patriotic parades. Any other wear is prohibited under the same rule.
Our uniform photo on LinkedIn guide walks through the DoD policy in detail.
A widely upvoted r/army post warned that a board-style photo reads as rigid to corporate recruiters. The top reply suggested a collared shirt, a neutral background and a relaxed expression. That's practitioner advice, not policy.
Military Separation Headshot Options, From Free to Paid
| Option | Typical cost | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Base photo or visual information office | Often free while you serve | Not a guaranteed service. Ask; Reddit users report mixed answers. You need to still be on active duty. |
| Volunteer photographer programs | Free | Nonprofit programs pair service members and spouses with volunteer photographers. Availability depends on your area. |
| Local studio session | About $250 median | One survey of 751 U.S. photographer websites found a $250 median (published by HeadshotPro, which sells AI headshots). A Marine on r/USMC was quoted $295 to $570. |
| Phone with portrait mode | Free | Needs a helper, good window light and a plain wall. Easy to look like a selfie. |
| AI headshot tool | Varies; check pricing | You upload your own photos and pick from results. Check that the output still looks like you. |
If you're still on active duty, ask your base photo office first.

If you're already on SkillBridge or terminal leave, or you just don't want to book a studio, FedShot makes professional headshots from photos you upload. You can choose civilian business attire and a neutral background, the look the r/army advice above describes, and you can do it from wherever you are.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I get a professional headshot before separating?
Get it before SkillBridge or terminal leave takes you off base. For most people with a planned separation date, that means around the 12-month mark, when transition counseling has to have started. Retirees can start as early as 24 months out.
Do I need a photo for USAJOBS or a federal resume?
No. Federal agencies such as NIST tell applicants to leave photos off their resumes. NIST's guidance lists photos among the things a resume should not include. Use the headshot for LinkedIn and private-sector applications.
Can I keep using my uniform photo after I get out?
It depends on whether you retire or separate. Retired officers keep a legal right to wear the uniform, but no one, retirees included, may wear it in connection with private employment when that could suggest official sponsorship. Former members who served during a war may wear it only at ceremonial occasions listed in 32 C.F.R. 53.2(b), so a civilian photo is the safer choice either way.
How much does a professional headshot cost?
One survey of 751 U.S. photographer websites put the median studio session at about $250, though that survey was published by an AI headshot company. Free options include volunteer photographer programs for service members and asking your base photo office while you still serve, though base offices aren't required to do it.
I'm doing SkillBridge. Does my profile need to be ready before I start?
Yes, ideally. SkillBridge can start up to 180 days before separation if your chain of command approves it, and your service may set a shorter limit. The people at your host employer will likely look you up. Have the photo and profile done before you report.
Does a LinkedIn profile photo actually matter?
LinkedIn's own help center says members with a profile photo get up to 2X more profile views.
