The combat zone tax exclusion officer cap for 2026 is $11,166.90 a month, the senior enlisted advisor's basic pay, plus whatever hostile fire or imminent danger pay you draw that month, by the formula in the tax code. IRS has not yet published its own 2026 figure. Enlisted members and warrant officers exclude all of their pay for a combat zone month. Commissioned officers exclude pay only up to that cap, and the rest is taxable.
How the combat zone tax exclusion officer cap works
Under 26 U.S.C. 112(a), an enlisted member who serves any part of a month in a combat zone excludes all military pay earned that month. One day in the zone covers the whole month.
Commissioned officers get a smaller version under 26 U.S.C. 112(b). They can exclude pay only up to the "maximum enlisted amount" for each month. 26 U.S.C. 112(c)(5) defines that amount as the sum of two parts:
- The highest rate of basic pay payable that month to any enlisted member at the highest enlisted grade.
- The officer's own hostile fire or imminent danger pay for that month (the special pay under 37 U.S.C. 310 or 351(a) payable to that officer, per 112(c)(5)(B)).
Because part B is the officer's own special pay, two officers in the same zone can have different caps if one draws hostile fire pay and the other draws imminent danger pay.
The 2026 base is $11,166.90, not the E-9 table
The highest enlisted basic pay comes from outside the regular E-9 table. Note 2 of the DFAS 2026 enlisted pay table lists a single rate for the top senior enlisted advisor positions (grade E-9), regardless of years of service. In 2026 that rate is $11,166.90 a month, or $134,002.80 a year.
The top E-9 cell, over 38 years, is $10,729.20. A cap figure built from that cell understates the real limit by $437.70 a month.
IRS Publication 3 for 2025 used the same method. It gave the 2025 limit as $10,983 a month: $10,758 base plus $225 imminent danger pay. The 2026 base is $408.90 higher than Pub 3's 2025 base, in line with the 3.8% raise.
| Your HFP or IDP that month | 2026 monthly officer cap |
|---|---|
| None | $11,166.90 |
| $225 imminent danger pay | $11,391.90 |
| $275 imminent danger pay | $11,441.90 |
| $450 hostile fire pay | $11,616.90 |
Cap = $11,166.90 (DFAS 2026 senior enlisted advisor rate) + the officer's HFP or IDP for the month. IRS has not yet published a 2026 figure; this table applies the 26 U.S.C. 112(c)(5) formula to the DFAS rate.
Imminent danger pay was $225 for most of 2026. Our hostile fire and imminent danger pay post covers the October 1 change to $275 and $450 and who it reached. Imminent danger pay is paid by the day, so a partial month adds less than the full monthly rate to your cap. Check your LES for the amount you were paid.
Which officers go over the cap in 2026
Imminent danger or hostile fire pay sits on both sides of the math. It is part of your pay, and the same amount is added to your cap. So if basic pay and HFP/IDP are your only pay for the month, the taxable part is just basic pay minus $11,166.90.
| Grade and years | 2026 monthly basic pay | Taxable each month | Taxable over 6 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| O-5 over 16 | $11,391.30 | $224.40 | $1,346.40 |
| O-5 over 18 | $11,713.80 | $546.90 | $3,281.40 |
| O-5 over 20 | $12,032.70 | $865.80 | $5,194.80 |
| O-5 over 22+ | $12,394.80 | $1,227.90 | $7,367.40 |
| O-6 over 14 | $11,396.40 | $229.50 | $1,377.00 |
| O-6 over 16 | $12,479.70 | $1,312.80 | $7,876.80 |
| O-6 over 18 | $13,115.40 | $1,948.50 | $11,691.00 |
| O-6 over 20 | $13,751.10 | $2,584.20 | $15,505.20 |
| O-6 over 22 | $14,112.90 | $2,946.00 | $17,676.00 |
| O-6 over 24 | $14,479.20 | $3,312.30 | $19,873.80 |
| O-6 over 26 | $15,188.70 | $4,021.80 | $24,130.80 |
| O-6 over 30+ | $15,408.30 | $4,241.40 | $25,448.40 |
| O-7 at 2 years or less | $11,540.10 | $373.20 | $2,239.20 |
| O-7 over 30+ | $17,242.20 | $6,075.30 | $36,451.80 |
| O-8 over 22+ (pay cap) | $18,999.90 | $7,833.00 | $46,998.00 |
Basic pay from the DFAS 2026 officer table. "Taxable" = basic pay minus $11,166.90, assuming basic pay plus HFP or IDP is the only compensation that month. Six months = monthly figure x 6. Other pay earned in the zone (see below) raises the taxable amount.
O-5 below 16 years and O-6 below 14 years sit under the base. So does every O-1 through O-4 cell. The highest O-4 cell, $10,509.90, leaves $657.00 of room each month.
That O-6 over 20 on a six-month deployment, drawing a full $225 of imminent danger pay every month (all months before October 2026), still excludes $68,351.40: six months at $11,391.90. Only the $15,505.20 above the cap is taxed.
Other pay counts against the cap too
The cap covers all of an officer's compensation for active service in the zone that month. Bonuses and other special pays earned there are excludable only up to the cap, along with basic pay.
An O-4 or senior O-3 has basic pay that fits under the base on its own. Add aviation pay, a retention bonus you become entitled to (sign or extend) in a combat zone month, or another special pay, and the month's total can go over. Only the part above the cap is taxed.
BAH and BAS are tax-free allowances whether or not you deploy, so the cap does not touch them.
Warrant officers and enlisted members have no cap
The cap is for commissioned officers only, and 26 U.S.C. 112(c)(1) says the term "commissioned officer" does not include a commissioned warrant officer. IRS Publication 3 groups enlisted members, warrant officers and commissioned warrant officers together for the full exclusion.
That means a W-5 over 26 earning $11,495.10, more than the cap base, still excludes all of it for a combat zone month. So does every E-9, including the senior enlisted advisors whose pay sets the cap.
The cap moves every January
Because the base is the senior enlisted advisor's basic pay, the cap rises with each January military raise. The 2027 rate will come from the 2027 DFAS table, which FedTools still shows as projected. We will not publish a 2027 cap figure until DFAS posts that table.
Calculate your 2026 basic pay
The combat zone tax exclusion officer cap test starts with your monthly basic pay. Use the Military Pay Calculator to look up your 2026 basic pay by grade and years. Then subtract $11,166.90. A negative number means all of your basic pay for a combat zone month is excluded. The calculator does not model the exclusion itself or HFP/IDP, so add those by hand.
Rank pages show the full year-by-year pay for each grade: O-4, O-5, O-6, O-7, O-8, W-5 and E-9.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the combat zone tax exclusion officer cap for 2026?
It is $11,166.90 a month, the 2026 senior enlisted advisor basic pay rate, plus the hostile fire or imminent danger pay you receive that month. With $225 of imminent danger pay the cap is $11,391.90. IRS has not yet published its own 2026 figure.
Do warrant officers have a combat zone tax exclusion limit?
No. Warrant officers, including commissioned warrant officers, get the same treatment as enlisted members and exclude all military pay for a combat zone month.
Which officers are affected by the CZTE cap?
In 2026 basic pay, the first cells over the base are O-5 over 16 years and O-6 over 14 years, plus every O-7 and above. An O-4 or junior officer can still go over if bonuses or special pays earned in the zone push the month's total above the cap.
Is imminent danger pay included in the officer cap?
Yes, on both sides. Your hostile fire or imminent danger pay counts as pay, and the same amount is added to your cap. If that and basic pay are your only pay, the taxable part is basic pay minus $11,166.90.
Why is the cap higher than the top E-9 pay?
The statute uses the highest enlisted basic pay rate, which is the senior enlisted advisor rate of $11,166.90 in 2026. The top cell of the regular E-9 table is lower, at $10,729.20.
