The Post-9/11 GI Bill housing allowance reset on August 1, and if you're a veteran, a Guard or Reserve member, or a federal employee using transferred benefits, your monthly payment just changed. These are the questions students ask every August, answered with the 2026-2027 dollar figures.
Your August 2026 Questions, Answered
Did my GI Bill housing allowance change on August 1, 2026?
Yes. The Monthly Housing Allowance resets every August 1 to the current year's DoD Basic Allowance for Housing table. VA's own rate page confirms it: the 2026 rates calculate your MHA between August 1, 2026 and July 31, 2027. With the E-5-with-dependents average up about 7.87% this year, most in-person students at the 100% tier will see roughly $75 to $150 more per month. Your exact change depends on your school's ZIP code.
How is the allowance calculated?
VA multiplies three things together: the DoD BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents at your school's ZIP code, your GI Bill tier percentage (100%, 90%, 80%, and so on, based on your qualifying service), and your rate of pursuit (your credit load relative to full-time). Enrollment at or below half-time pays no MHA at all. To see your school's exact figure, run its ZIP code through the DTMO BAH calculator as E-5 with dependents.
Why didn't my payment go up in January when service members got their raise?
Because the two systems run on different calendars. DoD updates active-duty BAH every January 1. The GI Bill adopts those same rates the following August 1. The 2026 rates reached troops in January 2026 and reached students on August 1, 2026. The seven-month lag repeats every year, and it works both directions.
What do online-only students get in 2026-2027?
Half the national average instead of a local rate: $1,261 per month at the 100% tier, up $92 from $1,169 in 2025-2026. It's the same everywhere in the country, because it keys off the national average, not your address. One hybrid-student note: a single in-person or hybrid course in your schedule moves you to your school's local rate instead.
My school's rate went DOWN. Am I stuck with the lower amount?
Usually not. VA's rate-protection rule, rooted in 38 U.S.C. 3313, lets you keep the higher prior rate as long as you remain continuously enrolled at the same school with no break in training longer than six months. The protection applies automatically; your school certifies enrollment and VA applies it. Transferring schools ends the protection, and so does a gap between terms longer than six months.
Why is my first fall payment so small?
VA prorates partial months on a 30-day calendar. Start classes August 26 and your August payment is 5/30 of the monthly rate, about 17%, with full payments beginning in September. Add in schools that certify enrollment after the term starts, and a small or late first deposit is the norm, not a problem. If it stays wrong past the first full month, that's when to call VA.
Do I get paid over winter and summer breaks?
No. Break pay is long gone. MHA covers only days you're actively enrolled above half-time, stops after your last enrolled day each term, and restarts with the next certified enrollment. The summer gap is the budget-killer to plan for.
Does Yellow Ribbon change my housing allowance?
No. Yellow Ribbon is a tuition-and-fees cost share between VA and the school. Your MHA follows the same ZIP, tier, and enrollment formula as everyone else's.
Can active-duty members get MHA?
No. VA lists active-duty trainees as not payable, and that extends to spouses using transferred benefits while the member is still serving. The reasoning is that you're already drawing BAH or government housing. MHA opens up after separation.
Same school as my roommate, different payment. Why?
Because three of the inputs are personal: tier percentage, rate of pursuit, and online-versus-in-person mix. Two students at one campus can be $800 apart, correctly.
The Bigger Military Money Picture
The MHA reset is one of three military pay events stacked around this time of year: the 2026 BAH rates themselves (we broke down the duty-station-by-duty-station changes), PCS season wrapping up August 31, and the FY2027 pay raise debate in Congress. If you're transitioning from service to a federal civilian job, or stacking GI Bill benefits with federal employment, our military hub collects the calculators and guides in one place.
