Military paydays 2027 follow the same rule as every year: active-duty pay is scheduled for the 1st and 15th of each month, and a payday that lands on a weekend or federal holiday is paid on the business day before. Below is the full 2027 calendar, the dates that move, and the two January 1 paydays that land in December.

The Rule Behind Military Paydays

Active-duty pay runs on a fixed calendar. DoD's pay regulation sets the payday as the first calendar day of the month after the month the pay was earned, and allows one mid-month payment. In practice that gives two paydays a month: the 15th is the mid-month payday, and the 1st is the end-of-month payday for the month that just ended.

When a payday falls on a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday, payment is authorized on the workday before, but never more than 3 days before the scheduled date (DoD FMR Volume 7A, chapter 1, sections 7.1 and 7.2). So a payday can move earlier but never later. The one carve-out is a payroll due October 1, the start of the fiscal year: the DoD Comptroller decides whether it can be paid in September (section 7.3). October 1, 2027 is a Friday, so it doesn't come up this year.

The 2027 calendar below applies that rule to the OPM 2027 federal holiday schedule.

How this table was built: each 1st and 15th from January 1, 2027 through January 1, 2028, stepped back one day at a time past Saturdays, Sundays and observed federal holidays (OPM 2027 schedule; New Year's Day 2028 observed Friday, December 31, 2027 under the in-lieu rule in 5 U.S.C. 6103(b)). Dates are worked out from the published payday rule, not copied from a DFAS list. Your bank may post the deposit at a different time.

Which 2027 Paydays Move Early

Most 2027 paydays land on a business day. Besides January 1 (covered in the next section), these are the exceptions:

  • February 15 is a Monday and Washington's Birthday, so pay comes Friday, February 12, three days early, the most the rule allows. That leaves 17 days until the March 1 payday.
  • May 1 and May 15 are both Saturdays. Pay comes Friday, April 30 and Friday, May 14.
  • August 1 and August 15 are both Sundays. Pay comes Friday, July 30 and Friday, August 13.
  • January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, and the Friday before it (December 31, 2027) is the observed New Year's holiday. Pay steps back to Thursday, December 30.

The other 2027 holidays don't move anything because they don't land on the 1st or 15th. Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 18), Memorial Day (May 31), Juneteenth (observed Friday, June 18), Independence Day (observed Monday, July 5), Labor Day (September 6), Columbus Day (October 11), Veterans Day (November 11), Thanksgiving (November 25) and Christmas (observed Friday, December 24) all fall between paydays.

Why the January 1 Paydays Land in December

New Year's Day is a federal holiday, so the January 1 payday can never be paid on January 1. In 2027 it moves to Thursday, December 31, 2026. In 2028 it moves to Thursday, December 30, 2027.

That deposit is the end-of-month payday for December, so it's December's second paycheck even though it arrives before the new year. If you pay rent or a car loan on the 1st, the cash shows up a day or two ahead.

When the 2027 Raise Shows Up in Your Pay

The 2027 basic pay raise takes effect January 1, 2027. FedTools labels 2027 rates as projected until DFAS posts the official table. Because the December 31, 2026 deposit pays out the last half of December, it's still at 2026 rates.

The first payday at 2027 rates is Friday, January 15, 2027. The projected raise by grade is in our 2027 military pay chart, and the House vs Senate raise comparison explains why the final number may differ.

Calculate What Lands on Each Payday

The Military Take-Home Pay Calculator tells you how much: enter your pay grade, years of service and monthly BAH to estimate what's left after taxes, TSP and SGLI, per paycheck at 2026 rates, so you have a baseline for each of these deposits until the 2027 table is final. For base pay by rank and years, use the Military Pay Calculator or jump straight to a rank page like E-5 or O-3.

Frequently Asked Questions

What days do military members get paid in 2027?

Active-duty pay is scheduled for the 1st and 15th of every month. When one of those days is a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday, the deposit comes on the business day before.

Does military pay ever come late because of a weekend?

No. A weekend or holiday payday moves earlier, to the business day before. In 2027 the May 1 payday is paid Friday, April 30, and the August 1 payday is paid Friday, July 30.

When is the January 1, 2027 military payday?

Thursday, December 31, 2026. January 1 is New Year's Day, a federal holiday, so the deposit moves to the business day before.

Why did my pay show up a day before the payday?

Some banks and credit unions post military direct deposits before the DFAS payday. The bank sets that timing, and it can change, so don't count on it for bills due on payday.

Do Guard and Reserve members follow this calendar?

DFAS posts a separate Reserve payroll schedule. Its 2026 mid-month and end-of-month dates move for weekends and holidays the same way, but check the 2027 version when DFAS posts it, and your LES. Our 2027 drill pay chart covers what a drill weekend pays.
