If you left federal service and need your SF-50s, the process just changed. On August 4, 2026, OPM launched the Document Request Service (DRS), an online system that emails former federal employees their complete eOPF instead of making them mail or fax a request and wait weeks. Most former feds don't know it exists yet.

What OPM Actually Launched

One precision worth getting right, because early chatter has it wrong: DRS is not a browsing portal. You don't log in and flip through your records. You sign in with Login.gov, submit a request, and OPM emails you a one-time link to download your Employment Folder as a password-protected ZIP.

What's in the folder is the point. The eOPF Employment Folder is the official record of your federal career: every SF-50 personnel action, appointment and separation documents, and the related records agencies filed while you were employed.

Two groups are eligible, per OPM:

  1. Separated federal employees whose records live in the eOPF system. This is the main audience.
  2. Current employees whose agencies don't issue equipment that can reach eOPF, a narrow edge case. Everyone else still working should use their agency's eOPF like before.

The Process This Kills Off

Until last week, a separated employee chasing an SF-50 had two options. Within 120 days of separating, ask the former agency. After that, records transfer to the National Personnel Records Center in Valmeyer, Illinois, and the request meant a hand-signed letter or fax, no online tracking, and a wait OPM itself describes as weeks or months.

That delay had real costs. Deferred retirement applications stalled waiting for service records. Buyback estimates sat unverified. Clearance reinvestigations dragged. DRS collapses that into a request and an email.

No fee appears anywhere in OPM's materials, and no formal turnaround commitment has been published yet. The honest framing: expect free and expect faster, but don't promise a same-day link.

Who Should Request Their Folder Now, Not Later

Deferred retirement candidates. If you left with 5 or more years of FERS service before retirement age, you'll eventually file for a deferred annuity, and the application leans on your service history and final SF-50. Anyone weighing a return to government. Rehired feds need prior service verified for leave accrual, retirement credit, and the military deposit clock. Having your own copy short-circuits the wait. What DRS Won't Give You

  • Tax documents. W-2s come from your former payroll provider; 1099-Rs for annuitants live in OPM's Retirement Services Online.
  • Paper-era records. If your agency hadn't migrated to eOPF when you left, generally separations before the mid-2000s, your file may be paper at the records center, outside this system's reach.
  • Someone else's records. Access is identity-verified through Login.gov to your own folder.
