About Selective Service System

Independent agency responsible for registration and selective service of U.S. men ages 18–25 for potential military service in a national emergency. Maintains the infrastructure for a military draft without actively conducting one. All male U.S. residents (citizens and immigrants) ages 18–25 are required by law to register. The agency has operated without conducting an actual draft since 1973 (end of Vietnam-era draft).
